Choir Workshops & Projects:
"In 2010 I started a choir festival called “Choir Fire” in my hometown Weiz, in Austria, including choirs of different styles ranging from pop, jazz, gospel, free improvised to world music choirs. Since then it took place once a year also including my children’s choir in Anger with their “Rock & Pop” mass project. And to keep the programme fresh I have also opened it up for Vocal groups such as the Styrian Vocal Jazz Quartet, including myself as a singer, who performed with the Big Band Weiz. We had Veryan Weston and his A Cappella Vocal group Vociferous perform Tessellations II for 9 Singers and also had Michelle Hendricks as special guest with the KUG Jazz Choir on stage.
The cooperation with the music school in Anger and a great teacher and arranger of this school, led to this years project called “Rock & Pop” Mass where Pop tunes starting from “Rolling in the deep” to “I feel good” were being performed. Working together with the church, religion teachers or others like sports and painting teachers was a good opportunity to create new interdisciplinary projects.
This summer I led the children’s Pop-workshop “Be a Star” in Birkfeld for children from 5-12 years old. Teaching them mostly English speaking tunes, simple canons and happy songs where the children could also be active and jump to the song was a key task. Basic rhythm exercises like clapping hands and snapping fingers on 2 and 4 was another major goal!
The “Together” project at the Secondary School in Anger including the school choir and the school band was a cooperation with musicians from outside the school. We worked together for 3 days and had a big performance on the last day with a big PA and a sound technician. It was a project showcasing music from different parts of the world and so the choir performed a Japanese children’s song and an African song.
I was booked as a one-day tutor for school choirs to give them further advice and to work on details like blending, volume, beginnings, endings, pronunciation and choir sound.
I worked as choir leader and solo coach at one-week children’s musical productions for 5-10 year old kids. The choir had regular practice and the soloists performed with head-set microphones.
I worked as a vocal coach for further education for school music teachers at a weekend workshop providing new song material and giving singing technique advice.
I organised a Jazz, Pop and Gospel Choir workshop for children and an adult Jazz and Pop Choir and Solo workshop called “S(w)inging Weiz” in my hometown. It took place in the local music school that is usually closed in the summer and so children and adults could get to know the music school and some of them would start in the following year to study an instrument there. To summarise it, working together with other people and organisations is very inspiring and brings fresh ideas."
